Poetry: A Rēta to the Ētita by tokorima Taihuringa
By tokorima Taihuringa | February 1, 2019
This “letter to the editor” struggles earnestly to say what it can’t and not what it does—to not talk about race, or tribe, or ethnicity is still to talk about it. tokorima, a Master Artisan in the Art of Māori Carving, approaches the diverse body of our community from a position both unique and universal, and also, refreshingly, one that acknowledges whiteness in the experience of writing and reading poetry.

tokorima Taihuringa
tokorima Taihuringa is currently enrolled in the Creative Writing program at the Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University of Wellington. They are a Tōhunga Whakairo (Master Artisan in the art of Māori Carving), and an adept in the Hauraki tradition of Māori Carving. The fundamental belief of Hauraki is, all sound creates a form and all form creates a sound. Therefore writing Poetry in English is merely an evolution of their art as a Tōhunga Whakairo.
