June Deadlines: 10 Contests and Magazines With Deadlines This Month
The summer season for submissions can be quite dry, and a lot of the great journals close their doors through the next couple of months, opening back up later in the year. But don’t despair! We’ve put together a great list of potential homes for your words this month. Whether you have a full-length manuscript or a handful of recent favorites, your poetry will out!
Guernica
Guernica is one of those rare magazines that does a dozen different things right. We have seen so many great emerging authors sharpen their teeth on this site. Only one submission at a time. Spend some time reading through the recent poems they’ve featured, and send in a poem you’ve got that fits their aesthetic. Submit here.

The Offing
Publishing works by poets who are traditionally marginalized in literary spaces, The Offing has risen from an offshoot of Los Angeles Review of Books to a consistent and highly respected independent journal. Perigee by Apogee
Apogee has been on the front lines of publishing exciting work from under-represented and emerging voices for years now. With their Perigee blog, they’re seeking out work that especially engages issues of social justice, identity, literature, and current events. Boston Review Poetry Contest
Mónica de la Torre is judging this year’s competition for Boston Review. Send up to 5 unpublished poems for your chance to win $1500 and publication in the magazine. Any writer in English is welcome. Submit here.

Akron Poetry Prize
This is a book-length competition open to any poet writing in English. Submit an unpublished manuscript between 48-90 pages of poetry to win $1500 and publication of your book. Oliver de la Paz is judging this year. Aimée Baker (one of our favorite emerging poets) won last year with Doe. Submit here.

Bitter Oleander’s Library of Poetry Award
Bitter Oleander is offering $1000 & publication to a poet for a manuscript between 48 and 8- pages. Be sure to check out their previous winners to understand what they’re looking for; for instance, Austin LaGrone, a poet who often writes about work, won the award last year. Submit here.

LAR Poetry Award
Los Angeles Review’s biannual award is back. The winning poem (50 lines or less) will be published online and in their annual best-of print edition. Send up to three poems in your submission, and one of them may win the $1000 prize. Submit here.

Omnidawn’s 1st/2nd Book Poetry Contest
Open to emerging authors who have published one or less books of poetry, Omnidawn’s contest has been finding great authors for years. Submit a manuscript of 40-120 pages soon. International poets are welcome. Myung Mi Kim is this year’s judge. International poets are welcome. Submit here.

Emerging Writers Award
The Key West Literary Seminar is offering full tuition support (airfare & lodging included, + $500 honorarium) for the January Seminar. U.S. poets who have not had a collection published with a major publisher may apply with a 5-7 piece sample of their poetry. Submit here.
