Welcome to Frontier Poetry
Welcome home, poet.
Frontier Poetry began as an arm of The Masters Review, a publication that focuses on new and emerging fiction and narrative nonfiction writers. We wanted to offer the same quality platform for poets, to generate real visibility for new poets, but also wanted the publication to have its own identity. In this way, Frontier was born.
We are looking for poetry that pushes language forward, for poets and poems that strive to place themselves at the edge of what language can do. But this does not mean that we are only concerned with experimental poetry. We believe that sonnets can be at the frontier, book-length poems can be at the frontier, confessional poetry can be at the frontier—as long as a piece is crafted with exceptional consideration for language & craft, that poem is a fit for us. Check out our What We Look For post to get more details.
Work by diverse poets and underrepresented voices is also very important for us to publish. We take our role as gatekeeper between poet and world extremely seriously and wish to use our platform as fairly and justly as we can. We warmly invite all voices to join us.
Without a doubt, poetry is bending toward justice, toward diverse voices (behind the mag and on the page)—and we at Frontier believe in the power of poetry to bend society with it, behind it, as the vanguard, as the voices from the frontier, and justice is, in the end, full of color, & blister, & raucous voices.
We’ll be clear: Frontier is going to publish poets of marginalized contexts over poets who have been or are more represented in other established journals, all quality being equal. Frontier will seek to nurture, find, uplift all new emerging poets & especially those poets emerging from spaces historically overlooked—including but not exclusively: LGBTQ+ writers, writers of color, indigenous writers, persons with disabilities, and women.
The frontier land of poetry, that far territory where all voices are equal, pushing toward the vast unknown spaces of the human spirit—we will plant ourselves there & report back to the world the beauty found.
Please send us 3-5 poems to our submittable. Submissions for our New Voices category are open year round. NV is open to any new and emerging author who has not published more than one full-length collection of poetry. The poems will be published online only and we will feature a number of new authors each month.
We are pleased to announce we offer payment to New Voices authors: $50 per poem, up to $150. We are thrilled to be paying for published pieces, & we will be highly selective in our choices for publication.
